Guillermo Varela could cap off an amazing seven day period by making his UEFA Champions League debut for Manchester United.
The 22-year-old came off the bench to make his Man United debut in the Premier League game against West Ham at the weekend but he’ll make his full debut if Louis van Gaal starts him away at Wolfsburg tonight.
What a way to be introduced to the pinnacle of club football – in a game where United know they need to win as they have to match PSV’s result against CSKA Moscow in order to go through. Talk about getting thrown in the deep end.
Paddy McNair travelled and trained so he’ll be another option at right-back but I actually feel Varela’s 45 minutes against West Ham were more accomplished than McNair’s overall, so it’s certainly a plausible idea that Varela would start tonight.
That being said, this game is completely different from the West Ham one. There’s immense pressure on United to deliver the win against tough opposition, so Varela would have to be on the ball up against tricky players like Andre Schurrle and Julian Draxler. Whoever does play at right-back is likely to be busy.
Zinedine Zidane praised Varela and thought he had all the attributes to take him to the top. Now he’s back at United and in the first-team thanks to injuries, it is his best opportunity to prove Zidane right.
