Rumoured Manchester United target Nicolas Gaitan has signed a new four-year contract with Benfica.
The deal, which will keep Gaitan at Benfica until June 2019, includes a €45m release clause.
The Argentine has been linked with a move to Man United almost every transfer window for several years but the contract should put an end to the rumours. Gaitan revealed that he was “delighted” to commit his future to Benfica.
“This renewal is fantastic. It’s a vote of confidence from the club and I’m delighted,” Gaitan said.
“It was a quick and easy decision. Both parties are happy. I’m very happy at Benfica, they’re one of Europe’s top clubs.”
However, the 27-year-old stopped short of ruling out a move away from the Estadio da Luz in the future.
“The topic of leaving is expected when the market opens,” he added.
“It would have to be something extremely good to take me away from here because I’m happy at the club. We’re leading the championship but also doing well in the Champions League. I feel good working with the group we have.”
Gaitan has become something of a joke figure among United fans as he is linked with the club so often. Hopefully the rumours finally come to an end as it is clear that United had no real interest in the player. It appears that the likes of Sadio Mane and Riyad Mahrez are instead on Louis van Gaal’s radar.
