Manchester United fans were pleasantly surprised with Marouane Fellaini‘s performance against Bournemouth on Saturday.
The Reds lost 2-1 away to the Cherries in a hugely disappointing performance. Having fallen behind within two minutes, Fellaini was the man to bring Man United back on level terms before a Joshua King winner in the second half sealed United’s fate. The Belgian started in a holding midfield role alongside Michael Carrick and was a constant threat with his aerial presence.
The 28-year-old was unlucky to finish the game with just the solitary goal to his name as he found his efforts constantly blocked or saved by Artur Boruc in the Bournemouth goal. Fellaini was then replaced by Nick Powell in the second half with United chasing the game. It was a strange substitution given the impact the former Everton man had had on the clash and United fans made their feelings known:
Can't slate Fellaini today, best player on the pitch for United vs Bournemouth

I don't get LVG's substitutions that's for sure. Fellaini didn't deserve to be off. Best player for United today

Literally Memphis and Fellaini were the only ones that posed any attacking threat for us..

Fellaini was the one played causing problems in the opposition final third and he's taken off. Confused.

Fellaini has been the best player today and he gets subbed off. Rubbish. #mufc

What annoyed me most about this result was taking off Fellaini ???? did we even create a chance when Powell came on?

Fellaini was proving to be a nuisance for the Bournemouth defence and was a huge threat in the final third. The Belgian looked like one of the few players who would make an impact on the game and get the Reds back on level terms but his premature end to the match saw United lose some impetus.
It was another poor display from the team but Fellaini’s performance was definitely a positive to take away from it. He will hope to build on this showing and make a case to be a permanent fixture in the centre of United’s midfield.
