Michael Carrick has insisted that Manchester United will be ‘giving everything’ to try and win the Europa League this year.
After the disappointment of being knocked out of the Champions League, Man United fans are frustrated but Carrick wants to try and turn it into a positive by winning it.
“To be out of the Champions League is a big blow for us — you can’t deny that,” he said.
“That’s there, that’s obvious for everyone to see.
“It’s a tough one to take. Once you’re out you’ve got to deal with it and we’re in the Europa League. When that comes around we’ll deal with that.
“We’ll be giving everything to win that competition, just like we’re always giving everything in every game. It doesn’t always work but as players that’s all we can do.”
There will be a split among fans as to what the focus should be this year – whether United may as well try to win the Europa League or drop out early in order to concentrate on the Premier League.
For me, I think we should want to win it. We’ve never won the UEFA Cup/Europa League, so why not try to add it to the collection? Plus, the added bonus of guaranteeing a Champions League place wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world given how badly we’re playing in the league at the moment.
At the end of the day, United should be playing Gent in the Champions League round of 16 but we miserably failed in an average qualifying group but now that we’re in the Europa League, surely we should just go for it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
