A young Manchester United U21s side took on Leicester City at home in the sixth league game of the season.
United raced to a two goal lead thanks to Nick Powell and Devonte Redmond. James Weir also slotted home to give the u21s a three goal cushion going in at half-time. Four more goals were scored in the second half, three for United with Marcus Rashford joining Powell and Redmond. Harry Pananyitou scored a consolation goal for the Foxes.
Injuries at first team level have had an impact on the U21s squad. Joe Riley was the oldest member of the defence at the tender age of 19.
Fosu-Mensah had an early shot but he misplaced his shot. However, other members of the starting XI did have their shooting boots on and inside a quarter of an hour played the Reds had netted two. A corner from Sean Goss found Powell who headed home to give United the lead. Exactly 4 minutes later Redmond doubled the lead with a powerhouse of a strike from outside the box.
Powell could’ve had a first half hat-trick, as he forced Henry in the Leicester City goal into making two good saves. Henry also managed to save an effort from Josh Harrop however he spilled the ball and Weir ran in to slot home on the near post.
Unlike the opening 15 minutes of the first half, the start of the second half was a bit quieter. There was an injury scare for Nick Powell when he landed awkwardly on his right foot. After some treatment he was cleared to continue.
Redmond bagged his second of the evening shortly after the hour mark. Matty Willock picked out Redmond with a lovely ball and the midfielder was able to finish coolly from a tight angle for his brace.
There was a brace of braces, two minutes later when Powell scored his second of the match, again coming from a header. Fosu-Mensah, who had a bright game at right-back picked out Powell with a lovely cross.
Pananyitou pulled a goal back for Leicester City, however, substitute Rashford restored the f9ve goal cushion with just under 15 minutes remaining in the game. In a stunning finish, he spun and scored from a difficult angle on the edge of the Foxes’ penalty area.
The U21s next scheduled match will take place in 2016 with the derby against Manchester City postponed due to FA Youth Cup action next Tuesday.
