Mikael Silvestre believes that Ryan Giggs will help Anthony Martial develop into a world-class talent at Manchester United.
Martial joined Man United in a surprise move on transfer deadline day and he enjoyed a blistering start to life in the Premier League, scoring four in four games.
However, his form has stalled somewhat in recent weeks, although United as a whole have been far below the required level. Silvestre insisted Giggs is the right man to guide Martial.
“I didn’t know him [Martial] much,” Silvestre said.
“I discovered him straight away. I saw that he had the potential to be at the top.
“We will see long term. At a club like Manchester United, there are expectations. At some point, he will start to feel the pressure. He will improve and then people will not forgive him if he doesn’t score in two or three games in a row.
“I think that Ryan will have a good relationship with Anthony to help him improve. Even though Ryan was a winger, he played with strikers. He knows their attitudes, their movements, he knows how to read the game. He will have the words and the will to build a good relationship with Anthony to help him improve.”
Giggs won practically everything there was to win at United during a long career at the club and his words will carry a lot of weight for Martial, as well as other youngsters at Old Trafford.
Martial’s sensational early form at United was never going to last forever and the slump was inevitable. It is likely that supporters will not see the best of the Frenchman on a consistent basis for a while yet, and it is important that they back him as he goes through ups and downs at the club.
