Holland coach Danny Blind has revealed he was encouraged by talks with Manchester United’s Memphis Depay before the last international break.
Memphis was initially left out of Blind’s latest Holland squad following some poor form but injuries eventually led to the youngster being called up.
The 21-year-old has so far struggled to make a real impact at Old Trafford but Blind insisted Louis van Gaal is “positive” about his chances of returning to form.
“I spoke to van Gaal about how Memphis was responding at United during his downturn. Louis was really positive”, Blind said.
“I myself have also had good conversations with Memphis. [Wesley] Sneijder and [Arjen] Robben have spoken to him about certain issues. That’s good, then it’s not only coaches [speaking to him].”
It is clear that Memphis will be a quality player one day, with the question being when he fulfil his potential rather than if.
However, at a club of United’s stature, players are expected to hit the ground running and perform to their best in every single game. While supporters are understanding of his situation, patience may wear thin if he continues to put in subpar displays and the pressure will ramp up as a result.
