Ajax director of football Marc Overmars believes Louis van Gaal will turn things around at Manchester United if given time.
Van Gaal has come under immense pressure at Old Trafford following back to back defeats against Wolfsburg and Bournemouth.
There have been calls for the Dutchman to be sacked, with the likes of Pep Guardiola said to be waiting in the wings. Overmars, who played under van Gaal at Ajax and Barcelona, insisted supporters should be patient with van Gaal.
“It’s crazy to criticise him so much already,” Overmars said.
“In football you need patience. They are building a new team. Yes, they have spent a lot of money, but leave him to do his job.
“He has had difficult times before in his career, but always comes through. He will survive and build a very strong team.
“Van Gaal is a strong character but is fair and listens to his players. We always enjoyed his training, it was fantastic. But he wants 100% every day – whether you are 18 or 35.”
While it is likely that United will give van Gaal until the end of the season, there has to come a time where you say results haven’t been good enough considering the amount of money the Dutchman has spent and how much patience he has already been afforded.
A Premier League title challenge is the least expected of van Gaal now that United are out of the Champions League and serious questions will be asked of him if he fails to deliver one.
