Rio Ferdinand not surprised by Javier Hernandez’s success since leaving Manchester United

Rio Ferdinand has revealed that he is not surprised to see former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez doing so well at Bayer Leverkusen.

Hernandez was deemed surplus to requirements by Louis van Gaal this summer and sold to the Bundesliga side in a £7.3m deal.

The Mexican has gone on to score 10 goals in 13 Bundesliga appearances this term, including a hat-trick in Leverkusen’s 5-0 victory over Borussia Mochengladbach on Saturday. Ferdinand congratulated Hernandez on his recent success:

In hindsight, the decision to let Hernandez leave this summer has proven to be the wrong one.

However, if United had kept the forward, he likely would have had to have settled for a place on the substitute’s bench, something he clearly wasn’t prepared to do.

The original mistake looks to have been letting him go to Real Madrid on loan two seasons ago. He had very limited chances there and his confidence was demolished. Had he gone somewhere like Bayer then, he could have come back to United rejuvenated having shown van Gaal what he could do.
