Paul Merson: I’d take Anthony Martial over Javier Hernandez

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes that Manchester United’s Anthony Martial is a better player than Javier Hernandez.

Hernandez left Man United this summer for Bayer Leverkusen, where he has scored 10 goals in 13 Bundesliga appearances.

He was replaced at United by Martial, who enjoyed a blistering start to life at Old Trafford. However, his form has dipped in recent weeks along with the rest of the team. Merson insisted Hernandez was a ‘priceless’ option but that Martial looks the better player.

“As for Hernandez, well I didn’t see him as anything more than a super sub. When he started games he never really did anything,” Merson said.

“There are not many players that can change a game, but he could and that was priceless. But, for me, I’d have Martial starting ahead of him.”

United’s decision to let Hernandez leave has been roundly criticised by fans as he continues to score goals in Germany.

However, there was no guarantee that he would be in the same sort of form had he stayed at United. The Mexican clearly wanted to start and Louis van Gaal was never going to give him that. It was inevitable that he was going to leave once he was informed of his planned role on the substitute’s bench.
