Robbie Savage: Ryan Giggs ‘deserves’ to succeed Louis van Gaal at Manchester United

by Tanveer Arayan

Robbie Savage believes that Ryan Giggs deserves to be the next manager of Manchester United after Louis van Gaal, although he conceded that Jose Mourinho is the front-runner.

Van Gaal is currently under pressure at Man United following back to back defeats against Wolfsburg and Bournemouth.

Attention has turned to who might replace the Dutchman at Old Trafford, with Mourinho, who was sacked by Chelsea this week, and Bayern Munich’s Pep Guardiola among those mentioned as potential candidates. However, Savage insisted that Giggs “deserves a shot” at the job.

“Let’s get one thing straight: I believe Ryan Giggs should be the next manager of United after Louis van Gaal,” Savage wrote in his Mirror column.

“Giggs has served his time as a caretaker and then as No.2 to van Gaal. He deserves a shot at the top job. But the board at Old Trafford must be sorely tempted to consider Mourinho as a front runner because he is a proven winner.

“His record speaks for itself. Coaches who win titles in four different countries do not grow on trees.

“It would be absolutely brilliant for the Premier League – truly electrifying – if Mourinho took over at United with a point to prove.”

Van Gaal giggs

Giggs served as interim manager following the sacking of David Moyes two seasons ago and he has been patient while learning under van Gaal.

The Welshman was linked with the vacant position at Swansea City but reports have died down in recent days, suggesting that Giggs is happy at Old Trafford. Whether the club sees Giggs as van Gaal’s successor remains to be seen but it would be a huge gamble considering he has virtually no experience of managing at the highest level.
