Manchester United are interested in signing young Benfica forward Goncalo Guedes, according to reports.
The Reds have been struggling in front of goal this season and are desperate for someone who can help create and finish chances in the final third. Guedes is a pacy forward who can also play on the left wing, similar to Anthony Martial, and he could be the man Louis van Gaal turns to to help Man United get their season back on track.
However, United fans may be disappointed to hear that they are linked with yet another youngster with potential, rather than a proven goalscorer. The Reds have relied heavily on 20-year-old new signing Martial this campaign and putting their faith in another teenager could prove costly. Guedes is certainly one for the future and with Chelsea reportedly interested in securing his services as well, United may have to act quickly.
Van Gaal has shown that he likes to sign young players with potential and help develop them while they are at the club but this policy does not always work out, as United have seen with Memphis Depay. The Dutchman came to Old Trafford with a huge reputation but has struggled immensely this season and is yet to really show United supporters what he is capable of.
It is clear that van Gaal’s side have a long way to go to get their season back on track but it does not seem as if Guedes is the man to help them do that. The youngster could turn out to be a brilliant player in the future, but any signing made in January should, typically, be made to help a team’s chances in that particular season, which it is difficult to see Guedes doing.
