Jose Mourinho would be willing to take a pay cut to join Manchester United, a source has told the Daily Star.
Mourinho, recently sacked by Chelsea, has been linked with an immediate return to management with Man United if Louis van Gaal is let go.
The Portuguese earned around £10m-a-year at Stamford Bridge but he is prepared to accept a deal of £6m-a-year to join United.
“Jose is making no secret of how keen he is to take charge of United if the job becomes available,” the source said.
“It is not about the money. Managing United has always been one of his ambitions because of the prestige and history associated with the club. He knows it would be a huge challenge, but he loves working in English football and would take a wage cut if it meant getting the chance to make United great again.”
It is obvious that Mourinho wants to get straight back into management as he also recently issued a statement making it clear he is not interested in a sabbatical.
Mourinho’s merits as a potential manager of United will be debated in the coming days but it is important that van Gaal deserves a dignified exit at the club, if he is to be let go. The Dutchman has enjoyed a long and successful career at the highest level and, with United set to be his last job in football, he should be recognised for the excellent career he has had, despite it not going to plan at United.
