Louis van Gaal explains why Wayne Rooney didn’t start against Stoke City

Louis van Gaal has explained that his decision to not start Wayne Rooney against Stoke City was a tactical decision.

Rooney was left on the bench which led to questions over whether he had been dropped following his poor form for Man United.

However, van Gaal insisted it was nothing to do with that and was solely a decision made because Rooney didn’t suit the style he wanted to employ against Stoke.

When asked about Rooney before the game, van Gaal said: “With this game plan it’s better to play with Herrera instead of Rooney. It’s not a drastic measure, it’s my game plan.”

Regardless of the logic behind Rooney not starting against Stoke, his form certainly means he deserved to be benched didn’t it? Fans had been calling for it to happen for a long time and van Gaal obliged.

To be fair, with Chelsea at Old Trafford in two days our squad is going to be stretched this week and maybe van Gaal also had one eye on that game, which could be why the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin didn’t start either.
