Confirmed starting XI: Manchester United vs Chelsea

by Ben Topliss

Manchester United: De Gea; Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Young; Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger; Mata, Herrera, Martial; Rooney

Subs: Romero, Borthwick-Jackson, Jones, Carrick, Fellaini, Pereira, Memphis

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has reinstated Wayne Rooney to his starting XI for the must win clash against Chelsea this afternoon.

Rooney could only make the substitute’s bench against Stoke City last time out but he will be looking to get on the scoresheet against Chelsea.

Elsewhere, Bastian Schweinsteiger is back having served a three-match suspension.

Memphis Depay and Marouane Fellaini are dropped, meaning Ander Herrera lines up at No.10 and Anthony Martial takes a place on the wing.

If Man United lose it will be the first time they have lost five successive matches in a single season since 1936. The under fire van Gaal’s fate may be sealed even if he does secure victory against Chelsea and it remains to be seen how the team will play.
