Steven Gerrard: Manchester United’s Anthony Martial tore Branislav Ivanovic apart

by Tanveer Arayan

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard felt that Anthony Martial had the better of Branislav Ivanovic during Manchester United’s 0-0 draw against Chelsea on Monday.

Martial started on the left wing for Man United and always looked to take on the Serbian full-back, succeeding on multiple occasions. Within the first 20 minutes, the youngster showcased his dribbling ability and his close control as he constantly skinned Ivanovic. Martial was unlucky not to be rewarded for his good start when he skipped past the defender and got his shot away past Thibaut Courtois, only to see it ricochet off the post.

Unfortunately, United couldn’t capitalise on Martial’s dominance and were found themselves wanting as the game went on, especially when it came to the impact the Frenchman was making. Ivanovic was clearly having a torrid time against the striker and Gerrard acknowledged that in his post-match analysis for BT Sport.

“Martial tore Ivanovic apart for 90 minutes, it was a shame that United couldn’t get that magic moment in the game,” Gerrard said.

Martial was once again a bright spark for United in a team performance that failed to set the world alight. The former Monaco man was one of the few players constantly looking to drive forward and make things happen by taking people on and getting further up the pitch.

However, as the game developed, Martial saw his contribution lessen more and more as Kurt Zouma began to keep tabs on his movements. It was frustrating to see none of the players from the middle of the park taking advantage of the space left by Zouma but it was further proof that Martial could be the man to get Old Trafford to its feet and resurrect United’s dismal campaign so far.
