Steven Gerrard: Manchester United need another ‘experienced’ striker

Former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard believes Manchester United need to add another striker to their ranks following the 0-0 draw against Chelsea on Monday.

Man United were much improved against Chelsea but a lack of quality in the final third meant they extended their winless run to eight games in all competitions.

The result has done little to relieve the pressure on Louis van Gaal, who has come under immense pressure at Old Trafford. Gerrard insisted United need more experience up top.

“I think they need an extra striker. There’s too much pressure on Wayne Rooney, Martial’s very young, Depay’s very young,” Gerrard said.

“They need an experienced striker to come and help Wayne Rooney with that pressure, with that goal burden.”

Gerrard has a point – Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial have talent but they are raw and will need time before they become the finished products.

The January transfer window will be a crucial one for United if they are to salvage anything from their rapidly deteoriating campaign. Whether officials at the club trust van Gaal to spend money and bring players in at Old Trafford remains to be seen.
