Chris Smalling: Manchester United squad are playing for futures

by Tanveer Arayan

Chris Smalling has labelled accusations that he and his Manchester United teammates are not playing for Louis van Gaal as “silly”.

Van Gaal is under pressure following an eight game winless streak in all competitions, although Man United were much improved in the 0-0 draw against Chelsea last time out.

There have been rumours that the players are not happy under van Gaal but Smalling rubbished the reports and insisted that no one is safe from scrutiny.

“If anything, we are all playing for our own futures as well. To say we’re not playing for the manager is silly,” Smalling said.

United certainly looked motivated against Chelsea as they played some of their best football of the campaign at Old Trafford, particularly in the first half.

However, it is still hard for fans to look past dismal recent defeats against the likes of Norwich City, Stoke City and Bournemouth. Results simply haven’t been good enough and the blame has to lie at van Gaal’s feet.
