Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel believes that Manchester United were “a little bit scared” in the clash between the two sides on Monday.
Man United put in a much improved performance against the Premier League champions but the game finished 0-0.
The result meant Louis van Gaal’s side extended their winless streak to eight games in all competitions. Mikel insisted that United were looking not to lose the match.
“Both teams are not in the right place right now to attack, attack, attack. Sometimes you have to be smart and settle for a point,” Mikel said.
“You could see in the game that United had chances to attack, but were a little bit sceptical or hesitant. Maybe they were a little bit scared. They were playing not to lose as well. Because of the fast players we have up front who can break, they were cautious and approached the game not to lose.”
Mikel’s comments are bizarre as United played some of their best football of the season against Chelsea, particularly in the first half.
United were unlucky not to score early on as Juan Mata and Anthony Martial both hit the woodwork. Chelsea, who have suffered a disastrous campaign so far, can count themselves lucky to have walked away from Old Trafford with a point. United, meanwhile, cannot afford to win anything less than three points against Swansea City next time out.
