Mata and De Gea should be part of the Spain squad which competes at the European Championships next summer.
De Gea, in particular, has been in superb form this term, most recently pulling off a string of superb saves in the 0-0 draw against Chelsea last time out. Mata was full of praise for his teammate.
“He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world so I am very happy for him that he’s been playing more for Spain in the last years,” Mata said.
“He is still very young so he will have a lot of time to earn a lot of caps for Spain. He is a very good goalkeeper, a world-class talent, and he will help us.”
Despite De Gea’s sensational form, he is considered to be the second-choice keeper behind Iker Casillas for Spain.
However, at 25 years old, he has plenty of time to improve even more and solidify a starting spot for his country for years to come. Back at United, the hope is that the club can once again resist interest from Real Madrid if they come back in for De Gea in the summer.
