Bastian Schweinsteiger congratulates Wayne Rooney for 188th Premier League goal

by Ben Topliss

Bastian Schweinsteiger has congratulated Wayne Rooney after the Manchester United captain became the second highest scorer in Premier League history.

Rooney scored his 188th league goal against Swansea City on Saturday, moving him clear of former Man United striker Andy Cole in second position.

However, the 30-year-old still has some way to go if he is to beat Alan Shearer’s haul of 260. Schweinsteiger praised Rooney after the game against Swansea:

Rooney has been subpar for the majority of the campaign but he was excellent against the Swans at Old Trafford.

The forward still has to do much more if he is to win back the confidence of the fans, as well as United in general, but he has got off to a good start having found form at exactly the right time.

It remains to be seen if Rooney will be rested for the FA Cup clash against Sheffield United next time out but it would make sense for him to play as United attempt to gain some momentum.
