Juan Mata believes Manchester United are capable of winning the Europa League this season.
Man United lost their final Champions League group game against Wolfsburg in December, meaning they qualified for the Europa League by finishing third instead of going through to the knockout stages of Europe’s elite competition.
Mata has pedigree in the Europa League having won the tournament with Chelsea in 2013. The Spaniard insisted United can win it this time around.
“It was important. Obviously it’s not the Champions League, which is probably the most important, but I’ve been lucky enough to win both. It was a great season [when Chelsea won the Europa League],” Mata said.
“We got knocked out from the group stage in the Champions League and finally we won the Europa League. We [United] obviously had a big disappointment a few weeks ago in Wolfsburg but we can convert that into a trophy, so we’ll try to do it – it’s a good feeling to lift a trophy!
“It can be done. When one door closes, another opens.
“Obviously it’s not the same because it’s not the Champions League but it’s another trophy and we’ll do our best.”
The Europa League is considered to be less illustrious than the Champions League but United should be looking to win every competition they are in.
That being said, there are still some excellent teams left in the competition and winning it will be no easy task, particularly as United have been awful as of late. Louis van Gaal – or whoever is in charge of United – will have a lot of work on their hands if they are to turn things around.
