Wayne Rooney named in BBC’s Team of the Week

Wayne Rooney has been named by the BBC’s Garth Crooks in his Premier League Team of the Week.

The 30-year-old got back among the goals in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Swansea on Saturday with a superb back-heel flick after Anthony Martial gave it to him on a plate.

After staunch but completely justified criticism of Rooney, it was good to see him back among the goals. Here’s Crooks’ team in full:

As good as it is to see Rooney in the team, I can’t fathom how he is chosen ahead of Martial whose performance was head and shoulders above his against Swansea.

Rooney scored a wonderful goal but he also missed a hatful of chances, albeit just like Martial did but his overall contribution to the game was far more deserving of a place in the team of the week.

Of course, That’s just my opinion but I do feel that simply talking about Rooney’s goal and ignoring that he otherwise wasn’t overly impressive against Swansea seems somewhat unbalanced.
