Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal: I ‘believe’ in Adnan Januzaj

Louis van Gaal has insisted that he “believes” in Adnan Januzaj after the youngster returned to Manchester United this week.

Januzaj joined Borussia Dortmund on a season-long loan in the summer but he struggled for opportunities at the Bundesliga club and the deal was ended prematurely.

Van Gaal believes Januzaj will benefit by returning to Man United rather than sitting on the substitute’s bench at Dortmund.

“It’s more or less the same as we have done with Will Keane, for example. They are coming to us to ask for a second chance, and Manchester United is a club who takes care of all their players,” van Gaal said.

“I think it’s a very good habit to do that and I believe in the talent of Adnan Januzaj, I have said that also, and I have said already that it would be difficult for him to play matches at Dortmund. Unfortunately I was right.

“When he doesn’t play there too much, he can train better with us and maybe he can play in the first team.”

Van Gaal also revealed that Januzaj is pencilled in to play for United’s U21 side on Monday night.

The Dutchman added: “He has been tested already this morning, he didn’t play so much 90 minutes, only pre-season, and he has to show his fitness in the second team and then we also have to see if the paperwork is alright and if he can play in the second-team on Monday. He is fit to play, and that is also very good, then he can show his quality.”

Januzaj burst onto the scene under David Moyes and looked like the real deal. He was one of the only positives for United that season.

However, his progress has stalled since van Gaal took charge. There is clearly a talented player in Januzaj but you get the sense that he needs to apply himself better and knuckle down if he is to be a success at Old Trafford. If he doesn’t this season, there may be a question mark over his future at the club.
