Louis van Gaal has insisted he is not surprised that Manchester United have not won the FA Cup in over a decade.
Man United last won the famous competition when Ruud van Nistelrooy scored twice in a 3-0 win over Millwall in the 2004 final.
Last season, United were knocked out by Arsenal following tricky wins over the likes of Yeovil Town and Cambridge United. Van Gaal believes the Cup is a difficult competition to win as lower league teams have nothing to lose.
“We saw that last year when we played Yeovil and Cambridge,” van Gaal said.
“Every match is difficult to win, no matter what level you have to compete with. That’s why Manchester United did not win it for a long time, I think. I cannot judge the way they have lost in the last few years, but last year we lost against Arsenal, and they were the winners.”
United take on Sheffield United in the Cup on Saturday and they will be a difficult team to face for precisely the reason that they will go into the tie with no pressure on them whatsoever. Van Gaal’s side will need to be on top form if they are to overcome the Blades.
Defeat against Sheffield United would be disastrous for van Gaal as the optimism that has built up following good performances against Swansea and Chelsea recently would completely disappear.
