Manchester United forward Anthony Martial was once again a bright spark in the team’s 1-0 victory over Sheffield United in the FA Cup on Saturday.
Man United needed an injury time penalty from Wayne Rooney to secure their progress into the fourth round against League One opposition, as the Reds failed to penetrate the Sheffield United defence throughout the game. Martial was one of the few players looking to run at opponents and try and make something happen for United in what was a dismal display.
The Frenchman started on the left wing before moving into a more central position in the second half in an attempt to make something happen. Martial’s desire to put pressure on the Sheffield United defence meant United fans were delighted with his performance:
Martial is the only person who can do anything.
Everyone else is just pretending to be busy

Utterly baffling why LVG has Martial out wide left for #MUFC against team from League One(no offence)His number is 9. Just play him there.

That's our problem. Martial is fast, but nobody else is fast enough to run with him. He is ready to cross into the box: there's nobody there

The introduction of the likes of Memphis Depay and Jesse Lingard in the second half meant Martial was not the only player looking to take players on but it was disappointing to see the youngster having to carry the forward line himself for the first hour. United have come under scrutiny recently due to their inefficiency in front of goal and Martial has had to bail the team out on many occasions.
Against Sheffield United, it was the combination of Memphis and Rooney to give the Reds the lead but once again the 20-year-old was key to the team’s fortunes going forward. After slightly improved displays against Chelsea and Swansea recently, United’s shocking performance will heap the pressure back on Louis van Gaal as they prepare for the trip to Newcastle in midweek.
