Paul Scholes attacks Louis van Gaal after Manchester United scrape past Sheffield United in the FA Cup

by Ben Topliss

Paul Scholes has heavily criticised Louis van Gaal following Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Sheffield United in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Man United were awful at Old Trafford but they scraped into the next round of the Cup thanks to Wayne Rooney’s late penalty.

It was a satisfactory result for United in the end but United were awful from an attacking point of view once again. Scholes slammed van Gaal while speaking on BT Sport.

“This is the way Louis van Gaal‘s team plays football, he’ll be happy with the 1-0 win,” Scholes said.

“You need to make something happen for football at this club, I’d be depressed if I was the manager at this club. I’ve tried to defend this team for the past two or three weeks, it’s just negative football when you come to Old Trafford.

“I don’t think van Gaal knows what [Ander] Herrera is, [Anthony] Martial is always changed, [Juan] Mata doesn’t have the pace for the wings, we don’t know.

“I don’t know how you can possibly be happy with a 1-0 win over a League One team. Van Gaal’s football doesn’t match United’s.”

It is hard to disagree with Scholes; while United got the result, their performance was abysmal and it was painful to watch at times.

United had millions of pounds worth of attacking talent at their disposal but they only managed a handful of shots against League One opposition. The optimism that was built up in recent displays against Swansea and Chelsea has disappeared and the pressure is firmly back on van Gaal.
