Wayne Rooney chooses Jose Mourinho as his Coach of the Year at FIFA Ballon d’Or awards

Wayne Rooney chose Jose Mourinho as his main nomination for the FIFA Ballon d’Or Coach of the Year award ahead of Bayern Munich’s Pep Guardiola and Chile manager Jorge Sampaoli.

There aren’t any surprises that Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal wasn’t one of his nominations – in fact, van Gaal received 0 votes from any player or coach – but it’s interesting to see him place Mourinho at the top.

By comparison, team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger chose Luis Enrique as his top nomination ahead of Pep Guardiola and PSG boss Laurent Blanc.

Given that Rooney was close to joining Chelsea at one point, I suppose it isn’t too much of a surprise to see Mourinho is atop his list after he won the Premier League last year but in the context of current affairs, is it indicative of who he’d want to replace Louis van Gaal?

You’d certainly think as much but with van Gaal still in his job despite Mourinho being readily available, there’s every chance United want to at least wait until the end of the season before making a decision.
