Morgan Schneiderlin and Ashley Young face late fitness tests ahead of Newcastle United

Louis van Gaal is still waiting for a final call on the fitness of Morgan Schneiderlin and Ashley Young before Newcastle United.

Both players missed out on Man United’s game against Sheffield United at the weekend and we did miss them.

We had a distinct lack of pace on the right-wing without Young and our midfield is noticeably weaker without Schneiderlin in the team, so the sooner they’re available the better.

When asked whether he will need to assess players other than Schweinsteiger, van Gaal said: “That is difficult, because it is so close to the match against Sheffield United.

“We have to recover. Yesterday we recovered but we have to see if the players are still overloaded or not. Until this moment, the players have not arrived so we have to wait and see.

“After I know all the data, I can line up. That is why it is always difficult in a period when we have to play a lot of matches. You have to wait to see how the players are recovering of the load in the match.”

I think both players would start against Newcastle if they were fit, so hopefully they can come through some late fitness tests and be available for the game.

The 1-0 win over Sheffield United was scrappy and massively papered over the cracks of a shambolic performance. Van Gaal is back on the ropes after that and anything but a win with a strong performance will see more frustrations boil over from fans.
