Jesse Lingard: Manchester United can take positives from Newcastle United draw

by Ben Topliss

Jesse Lingard has insisted that Manchester United can take “a lot of positives” from their 3-3 draw against Newcastle United on Tuesday.

Man United went 2-0 up at St James Park but were pegged back to level terms thanks to goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Wayne Rooney looked to have won the clash with a superb effort ten minutes from time but Paul Dummett scored a dramatic late equaliser to earn the Magpies a point. Lingard admitted he was disappointed with the result:

The performance against Newcastle was an odd one for United; they were much better going forward but the ‘control’ that they have shown as of late completely disappeared.

It seemed to raise more questions than answers for van Gaal – how is he supposed to give his side attacking freedom without compromising defensive solidarity?

United seem devoid of any balance and the solution to the problem isn’t immediately clear. You get the sense that United will need to enter the transfer market this month if they are to be successful at the end of the campaign.
