U18s: Man United 1-2 Sunderland: Shocking 10th league defeat in a row

by Tracey Germaine

Manchester United faced Sunderland at the AON Training Complex as they sought points to climb up the U18s Barclays Premier League Northern Division where they sat second from bottom at kick-off.

Luke Molyneux opened the scoring for the Black Cats but Indy Boonen equalised for the Reds in the first half. Dan Casey’s header allowed Sunderland to retake the lead at the start of the second half and ultimately claim the victory.

A young United side were unlucky not to open the scoring in the first five minutes. Sunderland then got a chance to break forward and sealed the positive play with a goal from outside the area through Molyneux. The game settled after that goal with both sides seeing some good play and possession without many goal mouth opportunities.

Boonen scored his second goal at U18s level just after the half hour mark to equalise for United. Charlie Scott was brought down and a free-kick was awarded which Callum Gribbin took. Michael Woud, in the Sunderland goal, managed to direct the on-target effort away from goal. Jean-Yves Poame had a decent chance to re-take the lead with a header at the far post but it was honours even at half-time.

The second half began in much the same way as the first with Sunderland taking an early lead. Captain, Dan Casey, headed home from a corner kick. Gribbin had the best chance to get the Reds back into the match with a freekick, however, Woud once again was equal to the strike and managed to tip the ball onto the crossbar. A header from Jimmy Dunne went wide.

That loss is the U18s tenth straight league defeat this season and McGuinness’ side will hope to break out of that run of poor form in their Friday night FA Youth Cup fixture against Chelsea.
