Louis van Gaal expecting David de Gea to stay at Manchester United

by Sam Peoples

Louis van Gaal is expecting David de Gea to stay at Manchester United.

The Spaniard was on the verge of joining Real Madrid in the summer until a late fiasco on transfer deadline day saw his move to Spain fail at the last minute.

He has since gone on to sign a new contract with Man United, much to the delight of fans, and speaking to reporters ahead of the Liverpool game, van Gaal said he didn’t feel the issue was playing on De Gea’s mind.

“I don’t think this kind of thing is playing on the mind of David,” van Gaal said.

“I never have thought that. All I am seeing is a player who is enjoying staying here and playing good games.”

Real Madrid have been handed a transfer ban which is great news for United on paper but I’d love to know what De Gea is thinking. He signed a new contract but his long-term goal will be to return to Spain, to the city he was born in, but hopefully this ban means that will have to wait.

Once again, De Gea has been one of our best players this season just like he has been for the last few years. If we were to lose him, we’d lose a huge part of our team which is almost irreplaceable but we’ll have to see whether Madrid appeal their ban and that’s something I do expect them to do.
