David de Gea wants to become Manchester United legend

by Sam Peoples

David de Gea wants to continue working hard at Manchester United and hopes to emulate the achievements of Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Saar by becoming an all-time great.

The Spaniard has without doubt been Man United’s best player for some time and his rich form from last season has continued up until now, leading to him being nominated into second place behind Manuel Neuer in the FIFPro World Team of the Year nominations.

After a farcical situation in which his proposed move to Real Madrid failed during the summer, De Gea has gone on to sign a new deal with United and speaking to Sky Sports, he made it clear how much he wants to cement a legacy at the club.

“I’m happy, I’m enjoying it and I believe in the team, De Gea said.

When further questioned about Schmeichel and van der Saar’s legacy at the club, De Gea added: “They were the greatest goalkeepers in the Premier League, they are legends for this club and that is what I want.

“I train every day to be the best goalkeeper in the world, that is my aim.”

That hardly sounds like a man who wants to leave United and the reality is that unless Real Madrid appeal their transfer ban which was placed on them this week, they won’t even be able to try and sign De Gea for at least another year. So, everything does point towards De Gea staying at the moment.

I think his return to Madrid is inevitable at some point in his career but the longer we can delay it for, the better off we’ll be as both Premier League and Champions League contenders.
