Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney strikes at crucial moment against Liverpool

by Ben Topliss

Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney had a frustrating afternoon until he scored the goal that sealed a 1-0 victory over Liverpool on Sunday.

Rooney, particularly in the first half, struggled to get himself on the ball up top as Man United failed to carve out chances at Anfield.

However, he was in the right place at the right time, as all good strikers are, to fire home United’s winner. A look at his stats show you how mixed of an afternoon he had: Two shots, 76% passing, two chances created, four take-ons, 100% tackles, 50% aerial duels, two clearances.

United were second best for the majority of the game but the result was all that mattered and Louis van Gaal’s side got just that against Liverpool.

Rooney has started 2016 brilliantly, hitting form for United at exactly the right time as they look to get their campaign back on track.

United face Southampton at Old Trafford next time out and it’s safe to say that the fans will be in a much better mood after a win against their fierce rivals.
