Tottenham Hotspur’s John McDermott rejects Manchester United coaching role – report

Tottenham Hotspur’s head of coaching and player development, John McDermott, has rejected an approach to join Manchester United, according to The Times.

McDermott is highly-rated at Spurs having brought through the likes of Harry Kane and Ryan Mason during his time at the club.

Man United reportedly made the approach before Christmas last year but McDermott chose to stay in London.

United’s current head of youth player recruitment, Derek Langley, is set to leave the club at the end of the season having reportedly grown disillusioned at the state of the youth set-up.

Academy staff at United are said to be concerned that Ed Woodward is more worried about big name signings rather than bringing through youngsters.

It is no surprise to see McDermott reject United as Spurs have a much better record with youngsters breaking through into the first-team and staying there in recent years. United need to do a lot more in terms of youth development but at least they are being proactive about the situation.
