Manchester United’s potential XI vs Southampton: Bastian Schweinsteiger returns

by Ben Topliss

While Marouane Fellaini provided the crucial assist for Wayne Rooney’s winner against Liverpool last week, the Belgian otherwise struggled to impose himself in the middle of the park at Anfield.

It is painfully obvious that Fellaini is not a central midfielder and supporters will be keen for Bastian Schweinsteiger to replace him in the side for the clash against Southampton this weekend.

The German missed the game against Liverpool but Louis van Gaal recently insisted that he is “coming back” and should be fit in time to face the Saints:

Schweinsteiger should provide a better platform for United to build on as they look to push on from the morale boosting win against Liverpool.

Morgan Schneiderlin also benefits from Schweinsteiger’s absence as the veteran is much more streetwise in midfield.

Elsewhere, Juan Mata will be hoping to keep his place in the side following an encouraging performance against Liverpool, although Jesse Lingard will also be in van Gaal’s thinking.
