Brendan Rodgers warns Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal he must win with style

Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has warned Louis van Gaal that he needs to win games with style at Manchester United if he wants to silence his critics.

Man United secured a 1-0 victory over Rodgers’ former side on Sunday thanks to Wayne Rooney’s late winner.

It was a big result for van Gaal as the Dutchman has come under fire following some meek performances over the course of the campaign. Rodgers highlighted that football is not always about winning when you’re at a big club.

Louis van Gaal is a top class manager and worked at some of the biggest clubs in the world,” Rodgers said.

“But when you are at a big club it’s not always about winning, it’s about how you play as well and that’s why there’s been criticism of him.”

Supporters have seen United play some sensational football down the years under Sir Alex Ferguson and van Gaal’s style could not be more different than that.

However, van Gaal seems to have let his side play with more creative freedom in recent weeks, particularly in the 3-3 draw against Newcastle United. It is a step in the right direction but United have to focus on winning first and foremost following the eight game winless streak over the festive period.
