Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal on the lookout for defensive recruits

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed that he is on the lookout for defensive recruits in the final days of the January transfer window following a slew of injuries at the back.

Ashley Young was recently ruled out of action for a “long time” following a severe groin injury.

He joins Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia on the treatment table, meaning youngsters such as Cameron Borthwick-Jackson will likely be thrown into the fold.

“To give a high performance every week normally is very difficult for youngsters, which is why we have to look always in this transfer period for replacements,” van Gaal said.

“The difficulty is that we ask for a level and the clubs do not want to sell in this period and that is our problem. We are looking, but it is not so easy. Nobody can understand that because it is easy and it is not so.”

The January transfer window is notoriously difficult to buy in, with clubs reluctant to sell their best players half way through the campaign.

Supporters shouldn’t hold their breath over a new addition at Old Trafford, although United will be doing all they can to bring someone in. It is up to the likes of Borthwick-Jackson and Guillermo Varela to make the step up and show they have what it takes to impress at United.
