Manchester United fans frustrated with Marouane Fellaini’s display against Southampton

Manchester United fans were left frustrated by the performance put in by Marouane Fellaini in the 1-0 loss to Southampton at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The midfielder started in a holding midfield role alongside Morgan Schneiderlin and made little impact in the first half. Fellaini struggled to win aerial battles in the middle of the park and was a constant let down when Man United looked to pass the ball around.

The 28-year-old was replaced by Juan Mata at half-time and the Old Trafford faithful made it clear that they backed Louis van Gaal‘s decision. It was another poor display from the Belgian and United supporters are beginning to lose their patience:

Fellaini has found himself getting an extended run in the side due to injuries to both Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick, but it is obvious that the fans would rather see him dropped to the bench. Van Gaal looks reluctant to play Ander Herrera in a deeper role, meaning until one of the other midfielders is fit we could see Fellaini in that role more often.

After the victory against Liverpool, supporters were expecting an exciting showing from United. It was the complete opposite and the defeat leaves them even further off the pace of the top four in the Premier League.
