Andy Mitten says Louis van Gaal vetoed a player who wanted to join in January

In his latest column for ESPN, Andy Mitten has said Louis van Gaal vetoed a move for a player who wanted to join Manchester United in January.

No mentions are named but with a huge problem in the full-back position, it may well have been a defender to boost our options but van Gaal decided not to go ahead with it.

Mitten said: “Only last week, the manager was active in United’s transfer policy and vetoed a move for one player who wanted to join the club. Van Gaal also talked like a man with a long-term plan for developing structures that can be built on for young players within the club.”

If true, it does throw a spanner into the works of the current narrative that van Gaal is on the verge of being sacked as it would be strange for him to still have the power of veto on a signing if he knew his future was outside of the club.

Secondly, we could really do with being strengthened in January, so I wonder who the player was given that we arguably need to improve in every position bar in goal.

With reports of failed resignations, player transfer vetoes and other stories all emerging within the space of 24 hours, the van Gaal rein as United manager has taken a turn for the worse and is showing no signs of recovering at the moment.
