Daley Blind insists that Anthony Martial has all the qualities to become a ‘great’ striker for Manchester United

Daley Blind believes Manchester United teammate Anthony Martial has all the attributes needed to become a “really great striker”.

Martial joined Man United in the summer for a reported fee of £36m and questions were asked of the club and why they chose to spend so much money on a relatively unknown prospect.

However, a memorable debut goal against Liverpool and a string of superb displays have silenced Martial’s critics. Blind insisted that the Frenchman will achieve great things at United.

“He is a big talent, he is still young and we cannot forget that. But you can see on the training pitch and even in the matches already how much quality he has. If he is working that hard like he is now, improving and improving each week, then he can become a really great striker,” Blind said.

“He is very quick of course, he is strong and I think he is really calm in front of the goal. He has everything needed to become a great striker. Now he is evolving and performing in the training sessions, working hard on and off the pitch with his languages and personality, he is coming along really well. He is a bit quiet, he is still young, but he is always in for a joke and he’s a good lad.”

Not since the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo from Sporting Lisbon has a young talent got United supporters off their seats as much as Martial.

Pace, guile and a confidence which belies his years; he has it all. It is a matter of when, not if, Martial develops into a world-class player but, at 20 years old, United must remember not to burn him out early into his career. Restraint should prove to be key in Martial’s development but, of course, United do not have the luxury of picking and choosing their moments to play him as results recently have been far from ideal.
