Mainz coach Martin Schmidt has dismissed rumours that they will sell rumoured Manchester United target Yoshinori Muto.
Muto, who joined Mainz from FC Tokyo last summer, has scored seven goals and registered a further four in 18 appearances this season.
There were rumours that Man United were preparing a €15m bid for the Japan international but Mainz quickly put an end to the speculation this week.
Asked about the reports, Schmidt said: “We’ve put that to bed.”
Along with Muto, United have been linked with moves for the likes of Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez and Lazio’s Felipe Anderson.
It is clear what type of player United are targeting; a forward with pace who is capable of playing in a variety of positions. However, the club have so far found that other sides are reluctant to let go of their best talent mid-season. Time is steadily running out for United to bolster their ranks but they may just have to accept that they must head into the second half of the campaign with what they have.
