Manchester United are looking to appoint a director of football and have identified FA director of elite development Dan Ashworth as a potential candidate to fill the new role, according to The Sun.
Man United are in the midst of overhauling their academy structure as they look to catch up with the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea.
Nicky Butt is said to have been offered a role in the new set-up but he is yet to commit to it one way or the other.
United’s U21s side have enjoyed success in recent months but the U18s are in disarray having lost ten games in a row.
The ‘Class of ’92’ are now a distant memory and it is unlikely that United will see a similarly talented crop of youngsters come through again anytime soon.
However, it is good that the club are being proactive about the situation by searching for the right people to improve things. It remains to be seen if Ashworth takes up an offer.
