Italian side Genoa are chasing Manchester United’s Guillermo Varela with the intention of taking him on loan.
TuttoMercatoWeb are reporting that Genoa’s president met with Varela’s agent to discuss a deal which could see the South American defender move to Italy, with a loan fee of around €600,000.
However, TMW goes on to say Louis van Gaal is against any deal going through and would block a move for Varela. Given how limited our options are in the full-back positions right now, that would hardly come as a surprise.
Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia are all injured right now while Matteo Darmian had to come off in the Southampton game after being hit badly in the ribs. It would be madness to let Varela go and reduce our squad depth even further out of choice.
Varela played very well for Man United’s U21s during the week against Sunderland. His passing was spot on, with an excellent range too, and he kept his temperament and positions throughout the game. It’s a good indicator of where he is right now in his career and that he looks ready to be part of a first-team squad.
Unfortunately for Varela, United’s injury woes in the full-back positions this season make it almost impossible for van Gaal to let him out on loan, regardless of how much Genoa want him or he wants to go.
