Louis van Gaal thanks Manchester United hierarchy for support amid exit rumours

Louis van Gaal has thanked the Manchester United hierarchy for their support amid rumours that he is on the brink of leaving the club.

Widespread reports this week suggested van Gaal offered to resign following the 1-0 defeat against Southampton last time out, only for Ed Woodward to talk him out of it.

However, van Gaal blasted the rumours as “awful and horrible” in his pre-match conference ahead of the FA Cup match against Derby on Friday. Van Gaal instead insisted he will “fight” to stay in his role.

When asked about the support, he said: “It’s fantastic of course, but also that gives you a lot of pressure, because when the board has such confidence in you, then the pressure is much higher than when they say it’s your last game or something like that.

“When your confidence is not so high, you can fight against it, but I always fight. I am always fighting. When you fight, you have a bigger motivation than when they support you.”

Nobody quite knows what United’s stance is on van Gaal, with numerous conflicting reports coming out over the past few days.

It would be bizarre of them to be completely behind van Gaal as United have been awful since November. Perhaps things will be much more clearer following the game against Derby; defeat would likely signal the end of van Gaal’s tenure.
