Martial had a subdued start at Pride Park but he grew into the game as it wore on and he eventually set up Juan Mata’s late strike with a superb solo run.
Van Gaal refused to get too carried away with Martial following the game but admitted that he thought the Frenchman’s performance was “fabulous”.
“He started not so good, I think, but I said that to him and after the first 20 minutes he came into the match and he was fabulous,” van Gaal said.
“I am very happy that he is a Manchester United player because I think he shall be a great player for Manchester United for a long time.”
Not for the first time this term, Martial put on an attacking masterclass, terrorising the opposition defence with superb footwork and movement.
Martial announced himself to Man United fans with a memorable strike against Liverpool on his debut and he has only gone strength to strength from there. The Frenchman will undoubtedly grow into a world-class player and van Gaal deserves credit for bringing him in.
