Manchester United are considering a move for Arsenal right-back Mathieu Debuchy, according to The Mirror.
Manchester Evening News believe a new right-back is the only potential signing which Man United could make today as Matteo Darmian, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young‘s injury problems have left the squad weak in that position.
Speaking at his press conference earlier today, Arsene Wenger confirm Debuchy leaving Arsenal could happen in January.
He said: “Debuchy [leaving] is a possibility. At the moment it doesn’t look likely but it is still a possibility. Yes [it will be a loan] because it’s impossible to conclude a permanent move now.”
This looks like a case of putting 2+2 together more than anything else. Debuchy isn’t an improvement on our current options and when Darmian comes back to fitness, he’ll come straight back in as our first choice right-back.
Also, I think Guillermo Varela‘s excellent performance against Derby has shown Louis van Gaal he has excellent potential to be an understudy to Darmian and both Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young are on the mend if things get desperate.
That’s not to mention that Arsenal would be unlikely to strengthen a direct rival in January. Imagine the backlash from fans.
While on paper the concept of Debuchy to United has some logic behind it, it’s not a transfer I can see happening
