Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has insisted that he is “very pleased” to see Pep Guardiola being named as Manchester City’s manager from next season.
City confirmed on Monday that Guardiola will replace Manuel Pellegrini at the helm at the end of the campaign.
Guardiola had previously been linked with a move to Man United amid uncertainty over van Gaal’s position at Old Trafford. The Dutchman insisted he will be happy to see Guardiola, who captained his Barcelona side when he managed at the Nou Camp, move to the Premier League.
“He is my former captain so I am very pleased to see him,” van Gaal said.
“And I can speak Spanish so it is convenient for him.”
Guardiola was said to be one of the front-runners for the United job in the event of van Gaal’s exit, along with Jose Mourinho and Ryan Giggs.
There had been numerous calls for van Gaal to be sacked in recent weeks but a 3-0 win over Stoke City on Tuesday has alleviated the pressure on the veteran coach for now. However, you get the sense that he will need to string a run of victories together if he is to get fans back on side.
