Jesse Lingard: Manchester United’s players to blame for poor displays

Jesse Lingard has insisted that Manchester United’s players are to blame for their poor form this season rather than Louis van Gaal.

Man United recorded a resounding 3-0 victory over Stoke City on Tuesday thanks to goals from Lingard, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney.

However, United have been largely disappointing from an attacking point of view this term, with van Gaal coming under huge pressure. Lingard insisted the Dutchman is not to blame for the poor displays this season.

“With the results, it’s not the manager’s fault,” Lingard said.

“We are the ones who have been on the pitch playing. On Tuesday, you’ve seen that we can get results we need if we put our mind to it.”

Despite Lingard’s comments, it’s clear that van Gaal was placing restrictions on his players, particularly over the Christmas period, which negatively affected performances.

Van Gaal responded to the pressure on him by releasing the shackles on his side for the recent games against Derby and Stoke and the displays that United produced were among the best of the campaign. If United are to be successful this season, they must maintain the attacking ethos moving forward.
