Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes the club made a mistake in not signing Pep Guardiola.
Manchester City confirmed on Monday that Guardiola will replace Manuel Pellegrini at the Etihad at the end of the campaign.
The capture has been seen as a major coup for City as Guardiola is widely regarded to be the best manager in the world. Ferdinand insisted that Man United need to replace Louis van Gaal if they are to be successful.
“When someone like Pep becomes available, it’s like, in player terms, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi becoming available. United should have gone for him. We have to climb up the table and bring someone new in,” he said.
Van Gaal had been under huge pressure at Old Trafford but a pair of impressive victories over Derby County and Stoke City has alleviated it somewhat for now.
There is no doubt that Guardiola will take City to the next level but there is a question mark hanging over van Gaal’s merits as boss of United. Jose Mourinho and Ryan Giggs are said to be the front runners for the United job in the event of van Gaal’s exit and the next few months could be a pivotal period for the club.
